NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to John Jay, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, Tuesday evening at the Doghouse in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest.
Hunter moved to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play following the matchup, while John Jay improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in CUNYAC action.
After dropping the opening set, the Hawks responded with one of their strongest stretches of the night in the second frame. Hunter hit .444 in the set and used balanced offense to secure a 25-23 win to even the match.
The third set proved tightly contested, with the teams trading points throughout. Hunter recorded 15 kills in the frame and hit .407 offensively, but John Jay narrowly claimed the set, 25-22.
In the fourth, the Hawks battled to stay within reach but were unable to force a deciding fifth set as the match concluded at 25-21.
Ahmed Mohamed paced the Hunter offense with 15 kills while adding three service aces and seven digs. Emanuel Cochran delivered an efficient performance with eight kills on 10 swings for an .800 hitting percentage while contributing two block assists.
Sebastian Gomez added nine kills and three block assists, while Demetri Gournelos contributed eight kills and a block. Wesley Stubbs orchestrated the offense with 21 assists and added five kills.
Lenny Arbitman also helped facilitate the attack with 17 assists as the Hawks totaled 45 assists in the match. Hunter finished with 47 kills and a .258 hitting percentage while recording 34 digs and eight blocks defensively.
The Hawks continue their season with a non-conference tri-match at Springfield College on March 7. Hunter will take on hosting Springfield at 1 p.m. followed by Elms College at 3:15 p.m.
