SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Hunter College men's volleyball team split a nonconference tri-match Saturday afternoon at Blake Arena, falling to Springfield before bouncing back with a four-set victory over Elms. The Hawks move to 12-5 overall on the season.
Game 1: Hunter 0, Springfield 3
(13-25, 17-25, 20-25)
Hunter opened the day against Springfield (12-3), but the Pride controlled the tempo from the opening serve in a straight-set victory.
The Hawks showed improvement as the match progressed, scoring 13 points in the opening set before posting 17 in the second and 20 in the third. Hunter finished with 19 kills and a .130 hitting percentage in the match.
Ahmed Mohamed and Sebastian Gomez led the offense with six kills each, while Emmanuel Cochran added three kills on a .600 hitting percentage. Eddy Kang chipped in three kills and two digs.
Wesley Stubbs directed the attack with 11 assists, while Lenny Arbitman added five assists. Defensively, Crisostomo Ibarra paced the Hawks with seven digs as Hunter finished with 17 digs overall.
Game 2: Hunter 3, Elms 1
(25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15)
Hunter responded in the second match of the day, defeating Elms (13-6) in four sets to close the tri-match on a strong note.
The Hawks opened the match with an efficient offensive performance, hitting .538 in the first set before closing out the contest with a decisive fourth-set victory.
Ahmed Mohamed led the way with a match-high 26 kills on .465 hitting while adding 11 digs. Sebastian Gomez contributed 11 kills, while Emmanuel Cochran added seven kills on a .538 clip.
Wyatt Kotuk recorded seven kills on .500 hitting, and Demetri Gournelos added four kills and a service ace.
Stubbs orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and seven digs, while Arbitman added 18 assists and two service aces. Hunter finished with 65 kills and hit .360 as a team while totaling 47 digs in the win.
The Hawks look to continue their momentum as they return home on March 10 to resume conference play. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. against Lehman.
