NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Hawks fell 13-4 in the opener before rallying for a 5-4 extra-inning victory in game two, moving to 10-20 on the season.
Game 1: Hunter 4, MSMCÂ 13 (5 inn.)
Hunter was unable to recover from a big early deficit in the opener, as Mount Saint Mary scored nine runs in the first inning to take control.
The Hawks answered with a run in the second inning and added three more in the fifth. Isabella Thumhart led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Elizabeth Thompson recorded two hits and drove in a run. Giordana Bowen added a two-RBI double to account for Hunter's early scoring.
Hunter finished with seven hits in the contest but was limited by defensive miscues that extended multiple innings.
Grace Basil took the loss in the circle, while Madison Drouet provided relief.
Game 2: Hunter 5, MSMC 4 (8 inn.)
Hunter responded in game two with a comeback victory, scoring three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game before walking it off in extra innings.
After trailing 4-1 entering the seventh, the Hawks rallied behind RBI singles from Basil and Sonia Rosales Rosenthal, along with a run scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 4-4.
In the eighth, Drouet advanced into scoring position and came around to score the winning run on a walk-off single from Bowen.
Bowen led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Rosales Rosenthal added two hits and an RBI. Drouet also recorded a multi-hit performance.
In the circle, Abigail Bidinger delivered a complete-game effort, allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out five to earn the win.
Hunter resumes its season on April 18 with a home doubleheader against Baruch.
