NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Hunter College softball team split a CUNYAC doubleheader against Baruch on Saturday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Hawks were edged 1-0 in the opener before responding with a 2-1 victory in game two, moving to 10-21 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Game 1: Hunter 0, Baruch 1
Hunter was limited to four hits in the opener in a tightly contested pitching duel.
Abigail Bidinger led the Hawks offensively with a double, while Giordana Bowen, Brianna Flores, and Madison Drouet each added a hit. Hunter threatened in multiple innings, including a chance in the fifth, but was unable to push a run across.
Grace Basil turned in a strong outing in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out three.
Baruch broke through in the seventh inning with the game's only run, and Hunter was unable to answer in its final at-bat.
Game 2: Hunter 2, Baruch 1
Hunter bounced back in game two behind a complete-game effort from Bidinger and timely hitting.
The Hawks got on the board in the second inning, as Flores scored on an RBI single from Basil. Hunter added another run in the fourth, with Basil again delivering, driving in Flores to extend the lead to 2-0.
Basil finished with three hits and two RBIs to pace the offense, while Flores recorded a multi-hit performance and scored both runs. Drouet and Elizabeth Thompson also contributed hits as Hunter totaled nine in the game.
In the circle, Bidinger went the distance, allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out five to secure the win.
Hunter returns to action on April 21 against St. Joseph's Long Island with a home double header at 3 and 5 p.m.
