NEW YORK, N.Y- The Hunter College softball team split a conference doubleheader against Brooklyn College on Monday afternoon, in the team's final home games of the season. The Hawks fell 11-5 in the opener before responding with a 10-2 run-rule victory in five innings in game two. Hunter also honored graduating seniors Adriana Ramirez and Brianna Flores prior to the start of the doubleheader.
Game 1: Hunter 5, Brooklyn 11
Hunter (12-14, 6-2 CUNYAC) battled throughout the opener but a late surge from Brooklyn (12-21, 3-3 CUNYAC) proved to be the difference.
The Hawks answered an early deficit with two runs in the second inning, as Grace Basil drove in a run and Abigail Bidinger followed with an RBI groundout to even the score. Brooklyn regained the lead in the third, but Hunter responded again in the fourth inning. Basil delivered another RBI, and Bidinger added a run-scoring single to tie the game at 4-4.
Hunter took its first lead in the fifth inning when Giordana Bowen delivered an RBI single to bring home Isabella Thumhart and make it 5-4.
Basil led the offense with two RBIs, while Bidinger also drove in a pair. Bowen finished with two hits and an RBI, and Madison Drouet scored twice as the Hawks totaled six hits.
Brooklyn broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring six runs to pull away. Basil was charged with the loss in the circle, working six innings, while Drouet provided relief.
Game 2: Hunter 10, Brooklyn 2 (5 inn.)
Hunter responded in a big way in game two, using a seven-run fifth inning to secure the run-rule victory.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the second inning, plating three runs behind RBI singles from Bidinger and Basil, along with a run-scoring play from Bowen. Bidinger was perfect in the circle for the first four innings, before Brooklyn cut into the lead in the fifth. In response, the Purple and Gold erupted in the bottom half, highlighted two-run home run fro, Sonia Rosales Rosenthal, while Bowen added a two-RBI single. Basil and Bidinger each contributed RBI singles as the Hawks pulled away.
Bidinger led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Basil and Elizabeth Thompson recorded multi-hit performances as Hunter finished with 10 hits.
In the circle, Bidinger earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out six.
The Hawks return to action on April 29 as they travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m.
