Hunter Opens CUNYAC Play With Doubleheader Sweep Over Lehman

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team opened City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a doubleheader sweep of Lehman (1-10, 0-2 CUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks earned a 10-2 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 15-0 win in game two, improving to 4-16 overall and 2-0 in CUNYAC play.

Game 1: Hunter 10, Lehman 2
Hunter erupted for five runs in the first inning and never looked back in the conference opener.

After falling behind early, the Hawks responded in the bottom of the first as Alejandra Aquino delivered a bases-clearing double to highlight a five-run frame. Hunter capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to quickly take control.

The Hawks added to their lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Sonia Rosales Rosenthal, and continued to build separation in the fifth. Abigail Bidinger and Grace Basil each drove in runs, while another Lehman error allowed an additional run to score, pushing the advantage to 9-2.

At the plate, Alejandra Aquino led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while Bidinger recorded a pair of doubles. Brianna Flores added two hits, and Rosales Rosenthal contributed a multi-hit performance.

In the circle, Basil earned the win, tossing a complete game while allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out seven.

Game 2: Hunter 15, Lehman 0
Hunter carried its offensive momentum into game two, scoring in every inning en route to a dominant shutout victory.

The Hawks opened with a five-run first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Adriana Ramirez and Elizabeth Thompson, along with a sacrifice fly from Isabella Thumhart. Hunter continued to apply pressure in the second, adding four more runs to extend the lead to 9-0.

Hunter tacked on another run in the before breaking the game open with a five-run fourth inning.  Basil drove in two with a double, while Thompson and Thumhart each added RBIs in the frame.

Basil finished with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Thompson and Thumhart each drove in multiple runs. Flores also added a two-hit performance.

In the circle, Bidinger was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out eight and allowing no hits.

Hunter returns to action on April 7 for the road doubleheader at Stevenson University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
