Hunter Splits Against Notre Dame (MD)

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Hunter College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Notre Dame (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks earned a 7-5 victory in the opener before falling 6-0 in game two, moving to 5-19 on the season.

Game 1: Hunter 7, Notre Dame (Md.) 5
Hunter used a strong start and a late insurance push to secure the win in the opener.

The Hawks got on the board early, plating two runs in the first inning behind an RBI single from Sonia Rosales Rosenthal and capitalizing on an error. Hunter added another run in the second as Abigail Bidinger drove in Grace Basil, who reached base and advanced into scoring position earlier in the frame.

After adding a run in the fourth, Hunter broke the game open in the seventh with three runs. Basil delivered her third hit of the game to spark the rally, while Hunter took advantage of multiple defensive miscues to extend the lead to 7-2.

Basil led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and three runs scored, while Rosales Rosenthal added two hits and two RBIs. Isabella Thumhart and Madison Drouet each contributed multi-hit efforts as Hunter totaled 10 hits in the game.

In the circle, Bidinger went the distance to earn the win, allowing five runs with three earned, while striking out six.

Game 2: Hunter 0, Notre Dame (Md.) 6
Hunter was limited to three hits in the second game as Notre Dame (Md.) controlled the action throughout.

The Hawks put runners on base in several innings but were unable to capitalize. Thumhart, Rosales Rosenthal, and Adriana Ramirez each recorded a hit for Hunter.

Notre Dame  struck early with two runs in the first inning and added to its lead in the third before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth inning.

Basil was charged with the loss in the circle, allowing six runs over five innings, while Thumhart provided an inning of relief.

The Purple and Gold resumes conference play tomorrow with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at York.
