Throggs Neck, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team continued its nonconference schedule Saturday afternoon, falling to Maritime, 4-0, at Reinhart Field. The Hawks move to 0-3-1 through four matches this season.
Hunter created several opportunities throughout the opening half, led by Georgios Tsiakas, who consistently tested the Maritime defense. Tsiakas put three shots on goal in the first half, including attempts in the seventh, 24th and 42nd minutes. His best opportunity came moments later in the 43rd minute, when his shot struck the crossbar with the match still scoreless.
Despite Hunter's pressure, Maritime converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Max Tsigalnitsky helped keep the Hawks within striking distance throughout the opening 45 minutes, recording five first-half saves. He finished the afternoon with a season-high nine saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
Maritime extended its lead with another penalty kick early in the second half before adding two more goals. Hunter continued to create chances, with Tsiakas having an attempt blocked in the 68th minute before Achilleas Fertitta-Boutis put a shot on target in the 77th.
Tsiakas led the Hawks' attack with five shots, placing three on goal. Fertitta-Boutis added two attempts with one on target, while Joshua Sanchez recorded two shots.
Hunter finished with nine shots, including four on goal, while generating five attempts in the opening half and four after the break.
Hunter returns to action on Sept. 19 for another road match against The College of New Jersey at 1 p.m.
