Men's Soccer Falls to NYU, 3-1, in Season Opener

NEWARK, N.J.- The Hunter College men's soccer team opened up its 2026 season with a 3-1 loss to New York University on Wednesday night at Lubetkin Field.

The Hawks (0-1) struck first in the 17th minute of play as Yassine Jaballah scored from just outside the box, unassisted.

NYU (1-0) recorded five shots before the Hawks' defense let up the equalizer in the 35th minute off of a corner kick. The Violets found the net two more times in the remainder of the first half in the 37th and 41st minutes, leaving Hunter in a 3-1 deficit heading into half time.

NYU recorded 15 shots in the second half of play, but sophomore keeper, Matthew Fridburg was able to prevent further scoring, as he faced 25 shots on the night with five saves.

The Hawks were outshot by NYU, with newcomer Filippos Lakiotis taking Hunter's only additional shot for the night.

The Purple and Gold returns to the pitch on Saturday as they travel to St. Elizabeth's University for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
