MORRISTOWN, N.J.- The Hunter College men's soccer team battled Saint Elizabeth to a 1-1 nonconference draw Saturday afternoon at St. Elizabeth's, moving to 0-1-1 for the season. I
After a scoreless opening half, Hunter's attack came alive over the final 45 minutes. The Hawks generated 11 of their 12 shots after halftime, consistently putting pressure on the Saint Elizabeth defense.
Hunter broke through in the 65th minute when Luciano Aguirre found the back of the net. Georgios Tsiakas set up the scoring play, earning the assist as Aguirre gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Aguirre provided a spark off the bench, finishing with three shots and two on goal in 32 minutes of action. Andre Baraglia led Hunter with four shots, including two on target, while Tsiakas added three attempts to go along with his assist. Cole Maguire accounted for Hunter's other shot on goal.
The Hawks' defense held the advantage until the 76th minute, when Saint Elizabeth converted a penalty kick to even the match at 1-1. Hunter continued to push for the go-ahead goal down the stretch, with Aguirre forcing a save in the 80th minute before another attempt went wide in the 87th.
In goal, Max Tsigalnitsky played all 90 minutes for the Purple and Gold and recorded three saves while allowing just the penalty-kick goal.
Hunter finished the afternoon with 12 shots, five on goal and four corner kicks. The Hawks held a 4-3 advantage in corners and outshot Saint Elizabeth 11-6 during a strong second-half showing.
The Hawks continue their season on Sept. 9 as they travel to Montclair State in search of the team's first win of the season.
