Hawks Advance In Search of Ninth Straight Championship

Flushing, NY – Junior Bomi Park (Astoria, NY/Younghoon) sealed the deal for the Hawks, winning her fifth singles match 6-2, 6-2 giving the Hawks the fifth and decisive point, defeating the fifth-seeded College of Staten Island and advancing to the finals where the Hawks will look to win its ninth straight CUNY Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament this spring.

The Hawks swept the doubles portion of the day with the duo of Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) and Elizabeth Feldman (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) taking the first flight 8-0, then senior Monica Calungcagin (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) and sophomore Anna Vagner (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) won second doubles 8-1. Trailing 6-4, junior Linda Ravul (Little Neck, NY/St. Mary's) and freshman Stefanie Smith (Little Neck, NY/Cardozo) rallied back and won their third doubles match 8-6.

As voted by the head coaches, the 2008-09 academic year marks the first time that the CUNYAC will institute the NCAA five-point-rule for tournament play, which states that the first team to five overall points wins the match and any existing singles matches are suspended and classified as unfinished.

Leading 3-0 after doubles play, Feldman gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 effort at third singles. Moments later, Park closed out the match. The Hawks were up a set in the four remaining singles matches.

The Hawks now advance to their fifth straight championship match which is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. However, with a predicted rain storm on the horizon, the match may be postponed with a rain date schedule for some point in the coming week.
