Women’s Swimming Opens Season With 58-28 CUNYAC Victory

Hunter vs. John Jay Results

New York, NY – The Hunter College women's swimming team opened up their 2008-09 campaign with a 58-31 conference victory over John Jay College, taking first in each of the eight events they scored in, at the Brookdale Campus Pool on Tuesday evening.

Junior Heather Alvord (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) led the way for the Hawks with two wins, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.28 and the 100-yard backstroke 1:04.66. Sophomore Nicole Hracs (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) finished the 100-yard butterfly in 1:13.91 for first place and also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:25.75.

Sophomore Marian Wu (Flushing, NY/Stuyvesant) and freshman Gloria Reyna (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) each had impressive showings in their Hawk debuts, earning wins in the 200-yard I.M. [2:40.94] and 100-yard freestyle [1:07.98] respectively.

Senior Carla McGregor (New York, NY/Delta Secondary) had the fastest time in the 50 freestyle, tapping the wall at 28.38, while junior Carlita Mendoza (College Point, NY/Bayshore) finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 14:46.13.

The Hawks return to the pool on Wednesday, when they travel to Jamaica, NY for a 6:00 p.m. CUNYAC meet with York College. York, who will enter Wednesday's meet at 0-2 overall, fell to the Hawks last season 123-44.
