Monica Calungcagin (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) won her first set 7-5, then dropped the second 6-3 to only take the third set 6-4 and clinch the Hawks 6-3 victory over New Paltz in women's tennis action Friday night at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
Sophomore
Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) and freshman
Elizabeth Feldman (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) teamed up for the Hawks only doubles win, taking first doubles 9-8 after trailing for the most the match. Hunter headed into singles play trailing 2-1.
Despite suffering an injury during doubles play, sophomore
Louise Hollander (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth singles tying the overall team score at 2-2. Her match was followed by senior
Antigone Tzakis (Astoria, NY/St. John's Prep) who won fifth singles 6-0, 6-3 and gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead.
New Paltz freshman
Stephanie Schara (Huntington, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) helped the visiting Hawks tie the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at sixth singles.
Kim then put Hunter back up with a 6-1, 6-4 win at first singles, setting up a showdown for the remaining two matches, second and third singles. Competing at third singles,
Feldman lost her first set 6-3, but showed a great deal of resilience by clawing her way back in the mix and taking the second set 6-2. Meanwhile, on the next court over,
Calungcagin was set to start her third set with Hunter up 4-3 overall. She would go on to win the third set 6-4, while
Feldman won her third set 6-3 to give Hunter the 6-3 win on the day.
The Hunter women's tennis team will return to action Saturday, April 26 when they head to New Paltz, NY for the New Paltz Tournament. This will be the Hawks final match before preparing to leave for the NCAA tournament.
