Hawks Score Season High 6 Goals In Win Over CSI

Staten Island, NY – Freshman midfielder Mauro Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/EBC Bushwick) who joined the team a little over a week ago, netted his first collegiate goal and would later convert on penalty kick to help give the Hawks a 6-1 win over the College of Staten Island in a CUNY Athletic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon in Staten Island, NY.

After today's match, the Hawks improve to 5-4-1 and are now 2-0-1 in the CUNYAC following the team's first in over Staten Island since October 4, 2006 when the Dolphins were shutout 11-0.

Hunter scored the first goal of the match nine minutes into the contest with junior midfielder Oscar Dotti (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) connecting on a pass from sophomore Danny Vera (Orange County, CA/Mater Dai) to score his second goal of the season. The Dolphins would end up tying the game four minutes later as senior forward Jason Ribeiro (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) put a shot into the lower right corner. Ortiz then closed out the first half with a close range goal at 42:53 to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

The second half was all Hunter, who outshot the Dolphins 16-2in the half. Junior midfielder Andreas Kalpaxis (Glendale, NY/Townsend Harris) gave Hunter its third goal a little under three minutes into the half, while Ortiz netted the team's fourth goal.

The fourth and fifth goals were scored much later in the contest as sophomore defender Carlos Cobo (Bronx, NY/World Cultures) put a shot into the net off a corner kick from junior Nico Sowinangoen (Woodside, NY/Jamaica) and then freshman forward Saif Zureikat (Amman, Jordan/Cardozo) converted for his second goal of the season on a misplayed ball by the CSI defender.

First-year keeper Bradley Highfield (Dryden, NY/Dryden) started in net for the Hawks, giving up one goal and making two saves in 45 minutes of play. Senior Noah Fessler (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) relieved Highfield in the second half and would play a full half without allowing a goal.

Hunter returns to action on Saturday, when they host the defending conference champion York College for a 4:00 p.m. match at the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, NY.
