A Marathon In The Park

Flushing, NY – Junior Bomi Park (Astoria, NY/Younghoon) played an incredible match, falling behind a set, coming back to tie, then going down 4-1 in the third set and once again battling back to win her sixth singles match and clinch a 5-4 victory for the Hawks over Baruch College in a CUNY Athletic Conference women's tennis match Tuesday night at the USTA Tennis Center.

Baruch held a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the team of former Cardozo standouts, Evengiya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) and Stefanie Smith (Little Neck, NY/Cardozo) winning first doubles 8-5. Kim would go onto win her singles match 6-0, 6-0, while senior Monica Calungcagin (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) took second singles 6-1, 6-0.

Baruch junior Miriam Mkrtchyan (Armenia/P.M. #1) was victorious at third singles, 6-4, 6-2 over sophomore Anna Vagner (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), while Smith lost her fourth singles match 7-5, 6-4. Hunter junior Linda Ravul (Little Neck, NY/St. Mary's) improved her season record to 4-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at fifth singles.

Park, a transfer student who played for CCNY last season, stepped into the sixth slot as the team was minus third singles player Elizabeth Feldman for tonight's match. During the second set, Baruch senior Sally Ai (Queens, NY/Cardozo) injured her leg chasing after a short ball, however she was able to continue to play, icing her leg during change over. Park would go onto win the second set 6-2 to force a decisive third set. At this point, all the other matches had finished, the score was tied at four a piece and now both teams were solely focused on this final set. Shaking off her injury, Ai came out strong in the third set with a quick 4-1 lead. However, Park remained resilient and slowly crept her way back into the match with some smart ball placement. After tying the match at 4, Park finished things out by winning the next two matches and giving the Hawks a hard earned victory.

After tonight's match, the Hawks are now 5-2 on the season, 3-0 in the CUNYAC and have now won their 50th consecutive conference match. Wednesday's match against CCNY has been postponed while Kim, Calungcagin, Feldman and Vagner prepare to attend the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament at William Smith College in Geneva, NY.
