Maspeth, NY – Freshman midfielder
Devin Leahy (New York, NY/Trevor Day) scored just three minutes into the contest, however a second half surge by the York Cardinals, scoring three unanswered goals, would help lead the defending CUNYAC Champs over the Hunter Hawks, 4-2 in men's soccer action on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Leahytook a pass from freshman forward
Saif Zureikat (Amman, Jordan/Cardozo) just past the midfield line and booted a shot that was over the keeper's head, to get the Hawks on the board. York would answer back 25 minutes later when freshman midfielder
Hugo Cianois (Santiago, Chile/School 436) had a similar goal to
Leahy's, hitting the top right corner, out of the reach of senior keeper
Noah Fessler (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) to tie the game up at 1-1.
Freshman midfielder
Mauro Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY/EBC Bushwick) regained the lead for the Hawks with a dead-center shot off a quick pass from sophomore
Danny Vera (Orange County, CA/Mater Dei) at the 40 minute mark.
In the second half, York sophomore
Elysee Vilsaint (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/South Shore) then took control of the game, scoring the go ahead goal at the 63rd minute, sending a free kick through the wall and past the Hawk keeper. He would then help close things out with a second goal 14 minutes later to put York up 4-2.
Fessler played 80 minutes in net for the Hawks, giving up all four goals and making five saves. First-year keeper
Bradley Highfield (Dryden, NY/Dryden) played the final ten minutes, making two saves. Sophomore
Marcin Kasza (Kobluzi, Poland/Newcomers) had four saves for the Cardinals.
The Hawks will take a week off and then return to the field next Saturday, when they are scheduled to host N.Y. City Tech for a 4:00 p.m. match at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island.
