Hawks Ground Cardinals, 53-42

New York, NY – Seniors Carla Mendoza (College Point, NY/Bayshore)and Heather Alvord (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) each one a pair of events to help lead the Hawks to a 53-42 victory over York College in both teams CUNY Athletic Conference opener on Friday night at Hunter's North Pool.

Mendoza earned the team's first top finish of the day, tapping the wall at 14:34.20 in the 1000-yard freestyle, almost three minutes faster than the second place York swimmer. She later won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 7:14.33.

Alvord started her night off with a 26.93 performance in the 50-yard freestyle and then took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.04. She would also help lead the team to a 1:55.49 performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Junior Olga Kovalkova (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) picked up her first win of the season, finishing the 100-yard butterfly in 1:25.45, while sophomore Marian Wu (Flushing, NY/Stuyvesant) came in first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:41.92.

Hunter, now 1-1 on the year, will be back in action on Tuesday, November 10 when they head cross-town to face John Jay for a 6:00 p.m. conference meet.
