Baez's Two Goals Lift Hawks Past Beavers

On Wednesday, September 22, the men's soccer team played host to the Beavers of CCNY in their second conference matchup of the season. The Hawks netted two goals in each half which proved to be too much for the Beavers to overcome and claimed a 4-1 victory. With the win, the Hawks advance to 3-3-2, 1-0-1 CUNYAC while CCNY falls to 0-6, 0-2 CUNYAC.

In the 27th minute of the game, keeper Kucuk Tayfun of the Beavers came out of the box looking to receive a pass from teammate Andrew Ostenfeld as he was challenged by Darwin Gramajo. However, he sent the ball over Tayfun's head and as a result of the miscommunication, the ball rolled into the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. Gramajo was credited with the goal on the play. Hunter struck again in the 36th minute as Mario Baez found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.

Baez, in the 52nd minute dribbled down the right side an had an open shot on net which he took and fired the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the game. The Beavers, with less than 20 minutes left in the game, gained some momentum as Llir Cunmulaj sent a pass to Muhammad Zakari that beat backup goalie Bradley Highfield, who just entered the game. However, their late charge was surpressed as Nicolas Escobar added one more goal for the Hawks in the 86th minute to make it 4-1 which is how the score would stand as the game concluded.

The Hawks are back in action this Saturday, September 25 as they visit Medgar Evers for a conference matchup. The game is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
