Hawks Play Cardinals to a Tie

Box Score

On Wednesday, September 29, the men's soccer team played host to the Cardinals of York College in a conference matchup at Randall's Island. After a scoreless first half, both teams battled through regulation time and headed into double overtime where neither side could capitalize on scoring opportunities. After 110 minutes of play, the game would come to an end with the score locked at zero a piece. With the tie, the Hawks record stands at 4-4-3, 2-0-2 CUNYAC while the Cardinals move to 3-5-1, 2-1-1 CUNYAC.

After a first half that saw only four total shots on goal, three of them by the Cardinals, the score remained tied at zero. The second 45 minutes was controlled mostly by Hunter as they outshot the Cardinals nine to three and had a two to one advantage in corner kicks.

Deadlocked at zero through regulation, the two teams headed into the first overtime period. The Hawks played very aggressive but York held their ground as Cardinal keeper Samer Abdel-Fattah came up with a huge diving save to block a shot by Mario Baez that could have been the game winner. After 100 minutes, neither team broke the tie resulting in a second overtime. Again, the Hawks were pressing the entire time, but York did not falter. The remaining seconds ticked away and the game would go down as a 0-0 tie.

Abdel-Fattah made 11 saves on the night while Hawk keeper Zade Haobsh recorded five.

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, October 2 when they play the Bearcats of Baruch College at the Metropolitan Oval. The game is slated for a 12 pm start.
