NEW YORK, NY - For the first time since 1986, the Hunter College women's swim team pulled out an impressive victory against Division II member Queens College, defeating the Knights, 51-44 in the North Pool on Monday evening.
The Hawks improve to 4-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in CUNYAC competition while the Knights fall to 0-4.
Hunter opened the event strong, winning the 200 yard medley relay in 2:05.06, a good four seconds ahead of Queens as Marian Wu, Sara Pazmino, Courtney McEvoy Lee and Gloria Reyna all combined for the victory.
Despite Angela Parra winning the 1000 yard freestyle, Brianna DiGiore (12:40.99) and Ivanna Tellez (13:00.34) each swam into second and third respectively.
Similarly, the Knights picked up first place in the 200 yard freestyle but the Hawks were right on their heels as Jennifer Dzurita (2:09.30) and Chryzl Goco (2:16.74) took second and third to keep things close.
Queens again stole first place in the 50 yard freestyle as Emina Kadrich tapped in ahead of Charlotte Collazo (27.92) just .35 seconds faster to take first place while Tiffany Magno (28.78) finished in third place.
Hunter took the 200 yard individual medley as Pazmino claimed victory in 2:31.71 and Wu finished third in 2:37.92.
The back and forth affair continued with the 100 yard butterfly which saw Queens finished first while the Hawks settled in second and third as Goco (1:10.38) and McEvoy Lee (1:10.73) finished less than a second apart.
In the 100 yard freestyle, Angela Parra took first place for the Knights in 58.90 while Dzurita (59.09) and Collazo (1:02.11) finished second and third.
The eighth event of the night was the 100 yard backstroke and went by way of Queens College as Emina Kadrich (1:08.52) swam into first ahead of Wu (1:11.20) who took second place.
The 500 yard freestyle saw DiGiore (6:08.94) and Tellez (6:13.18) combine for a 2-3 finish.
The Hawks took second and third in the 100 yard breaststroke with Pazmino (1:16.45) and Wynette Almeida (1:26.53) combining for the effort.
Ultimately, it was the 200 yard freestyle relay that made the difference as Hunter edged out Queens to take first place with Collazo, Goco, Dzurita and Magno getting the job down in 1:50.71 while Hunter's second relay claimed second place. Gloria Reyna, Tellez, McEvoy Lee and Collazo all provided strong swims to give Hunter a 1:56.23 timestamp and help seal Monday's victory.
The Hawks return to action on Homecoming, Friday, December 2nd as they host St. Elizabeth College at 6pm in the North Building Pool.
