NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College women's swimming team defeated the Screaming Eagles of St. Elizabeth College this evening, 64-31 at Homecoming.
The Hawks improved to 6-2 while the Screaming Eagles fell to 2-4.
Hunter claimed seven victories and registered several strong swims, including Sara Pazmino who narrowly missed breaking the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke as she won in a time of 2:44.05.
The Hawks opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay with Chryzl Goco, Pazmino, Courtney McEvoy Lee and Jennifer Dzurita combining for the 4:33.11 finish.
St. Elizabeth captured first in the 1000-yard freestyle but Hunter's Paulina Backiel (14.55.67) and Melissa Cruz (16:24.52) combined for the two-three finish in the event.
In the 200-yard freestyle Briana DiGiore (2:15.92) and Axinia Gamez (2:38.39) took second and third behind a Screaming Eagle.
The 50-yard free also went by way of the Screaming Eagles but Hunter saw Charlotte Collazo and Josie Joseph finish second and third in 27.71 and 35.18 respectively.
Marian Wu won the 200-yard individual medley convincingly, doing so in 2:36.01, a good nine seconds ahead of the competition. Sarah McGovern also earned a third place finish in the race for the Hawks, tapping in at 2:59.87.
McEvoy Lee took second in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:45.01 timestamp while Gloria Reyna swam into third behind her in 3:15.17.
The Hawks would go on to win the next five events, starting with the 100-yard freestyle which Dzurita won in 59.00 while Tiffany Magno took second in 1:02.96.
The win in the 200-yard backstroke belonged to Goco with a 2:27.60 timestamp.
Ivanna Tellez (6:13.85) picked up a win in the 500-yard freestyle while Juliette Collazo finished second, clocking in at 6:40.96.
Following Pazmino's win in the 200-yard breaststroke, the Hawks “A” relay team bested the “B” squad as Collazo, Goco, Dzurita and Magno swam into first in 4:08.73. The “B” squad, including DiGiore, Wu, Reyna and McEvoy Lee were second with a time of 4:22.73.
The Hawks return to the pool on Tuesday, December 6th when they travel to St. Joseph's College – Long Island. The meet is slated to start at 6pm.
