PATCHOGUE, NY – The Hunter College women's swim team continued its dominant 2011-12 campaign with a 111-91 come from behind victory against the St. Joseph's College-Long Island Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening.
Hunter is currently enjoying a four-meet winning streak and improved to 7-2 on the year while St. Joseph's College-L.I. dropped to 2-2.
The Hawks were impressive last night, mounting a comeback in the final two events to capture the meet as Sara Pazmino won the 100-yard breaststroke—again narrowly missing the school record, in 1:16.03. She was joined by Christina Chu (1:30.36) who finished third and Priscilla Naula (1:55.28) who came in fifth to add points for the visitors.
Both HC relay teams placed in the 200-yard freestyle relay to give the Hawks a total of 15 points to push them ahead of the Golden Eagles, 111-91. Hunter's "A" relay, including Marian Wu, Gloria Reyna, Juliette Collazo and Briana DiGiore came in first in a time of 1:59.54 while the “B” team including Deborah Cruz, Anna Pasieka, Paulina Backiel and Axinia Gamez finished second in 2:26.75.
St. Joseph's wanted to set the tone early, as the hosts won five out of the first six events including the 200-yard medley relay which push Hunter's “A” team consisting of Chryzl Goco, Sara Pazmino, Ivanna Tellez and Charlotte Collazo into second with a 2:08.63 timestamp.
The 100-yard freestyle saw Juliette Collazo finish third in 13:41.35 as the Hawks tried to keep pace.
Hunter claimed the next event as DiGiore won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:15.98.
The 50-yard freestyle saw Charlotte Collazo and marian Wu take second and third with respective times of 28.03 and 28.40 before Pazmino (2:29.72) and Goco (2:33.35) went 2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Hunter also went 2-3 in the 100-yard butterfly as Telez (1:14.29) and Collazo (1:17.29) combined for the finish.
Charlotte Collazo swam for the Hawks' second victory of the event in the 100-yard free, taking first place in 1:01.89 with a sizeable lead over second place.
Goco and Wu returned to action in the 100-yard backstroke and swam a close race taking down second and third place respectively in 1:10.60 and 1:10.80.
Finally, the 500-yard freestyle went to DiGiore who swam the race in 6:06.02 to help spur the Hawks on to victory. Backiel (7:22.53) and Gamez (7:26.27) each finished in third and fourth place as well.
The Hawks are back in action this Friday with a CUNYAC competition at Lehman College at 6pm.
