JAMAICA, NY – Hunter College outshot York College 21-14 on Wednesday afternoon but the Cardinals made the most of their opportunities, finding the net twice to defeat the Hawks, 2-1 in CUNY Athletic Conference play.
Junior midfielder
Mario Baez paced the squad with three shots on goal in four attempts and netted the lone goal for the Hawks with a late header for the team's only score. Sophomore
Adamu Hamza also managed three shots on goal in as many attempts with two late equalizer attempts but was unable to connect.
Hunter dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the CUNYAC while the Cardinals improved to 2-10 and 2-2 in conference play.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Andre Adelson tucked a shot away at the 39:11 mark.
With little doing in the early stages of the second half, Cardinal Edmer Kimopr Geffard made it a 2-0 affair in the 70
th minute, scoring off a rebound shot, putting the Hawks further out of reach.
Baez and the Hawks struck back quickly however, as the midfielder found the net, connecting off a corner with a neat header to make it a 2-1 affair.
Despite outshooting the Cardinals 15-6 in the second half, the Hawks were unable to net an equalizer as York held on for the victory.
Hunter returns to action this Saturday when they welcome Baruch College. Kick-off is slated for 5 pm.
