Women's Volleyball Falls in CUNYAC Finals

New York, N.Y – The women's volleyball lost a gut-wrenching match to the Bearcats of Baruch in the CUNYAC/Pepsi Championships, 2-3 (25-11, 21-25-18-25, 25-20, 11-15). The women defeated Lehman College 3-1 earlier in the day in the semi-final round to get to the finals.

The Hawks started off strong in the first set, using their home court to their advantage. They went on a 10-1 run in the first set from errors on the Baruch side and kills from Karolina Gadja. The Hawks got the score to 21-9 and after kills by Lucia Stosic and Samantha Barrett the Hawks closed out the first set with relative ease, 25-11.

The Bearcats were able to regroup, and took the next two sets 18-25 and 20-25 to make the score 1-2 in their favor.

During the fourth set, the Hawks were able to rebound back by taking an early 10-6 lead. After Baruch was able to get the score to 11-10, Hunter went on an 8-2 run thanks to four kills from Stosic and a kill from Brianna O'Hagan, getting the score to 19-12. The Bearcats then went on a  6-2 run for themselves making things even more tense, making the score 23-19. The Hawks were able to pull it together to take the fourth set 25-20, with the score being two sets a piece.

The fifth and final set deemed to be a back and forth affair, with no team taking more than a two point lead up until Baruch's Michelle Stommes hit a kill making the score 7-10 in their favor. After errors on the Hawks end, the Bearcats finished the match out with an ace from Crystle Dela Cruz to win their third consecutive CUNYAC Championships, and an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Senior Alisa Jaganjac had a game-high of 33 digs, while freshman Karolina Gajda had a team high of 15 kills and and six digs. Lucia Stosic had 10 kills and five blocks while Taylor Kordich had six kills, 19 assists, and seven digs. Kristine Ciurcina tallied 24 assists and 12 digs.

Dela Cruz was named the MVP of the tournament with 49 assists, 14 digs, and eight kills.

The Hawks finish their season with a 19-14 record.
