The new Hunter College Athletics Alumni Chapter has continued a segment, "Hunter Hawks: Where Are They Now?" We caught up with a former women's volleyball student-athlete from 1987-1990, Denise Ortega to find out what she's been up to!
Where do you live now and what are you up to these days?
I live in Jersey City now. I have 3 daughters; Cecily Marie (21), Raquel (13), Darian (12)  and work in finance for celebrity clients such as Dr. Oz and Geraldo Rivera in NYC.
Why did you choose Hunter College?
I couldn't afford to go away to school. Hunter had the best athletic program to go along with high academic standards.
What is your favorite memory as a Hawk?
Road trips for weekend tournaments.
Do you still keep in touch with any of your former teammates and if so, who?
Yes, Carmen Tieso, Natasha Delgado, Veronica Vega.Â
Do you still follow the Hawks and what are your thoughts on the program today?
I haven't followed the Hawks but I know it's in good hands with
Terry Wansart. She was my volleyball coach back then and pushed me to be the best that I could be. She took the time to get to know us personally and was always helpful in solving problems. The best coach I ever had. I am very excited to be a part of the new Hunter College Athletics Alumni Chapter. It's time to give back to the place I hold dear in my heart and help form a bridge of unity between the new and former athletes. You can bet I will be present at a lot more matches and events in the years to come.
How has your experience as a Hawk or your sport helped you in your post-collegiate life?
Yes, playing volleyball is still a big part of my life. It's helped me stay in pretty good shape and it's a stress reliever. When I am on the volleyball court all problems and issues in my life are forgotten. I am no longer just one person figuring it out. I am part of a team which feels good. Every great dig, serve or hit against the competition feels awesome. With all the drama in my family life back then and sometimes now, it has kept me sane, focused and happy. Besides I still need a way to expend all my extra energy.Â
