Records Keep Falling As Hawks Defeat St. Joseph's College

NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter swimming team continued to break records, as they defeated St. Joseph's College 71-50, to improve to 3-0 on the early season.

The record breaking began with the 200 Fly as Alexandra Rubiano shattered Deidre Cashman's 31 year old record (2:23.61) going 2:18.41. Carla Canning broke her own 200 breaststroke record (2:40.03) going 2:40.00, but came second to teammate Jessica Lou, who set the new team record at 2:39.15.

Rubiano came back later to break the 100 fly record of Cashman's (1:03.10) set in the '83-'84 season, by touching in at 1:02.29. Record breaking became a team effort in the 400 Freestyle relay at the end when Lindsey Pero, J. Lou, A. Rubiano and Charlotte Collazo went 3:57.50, taking more than 2 seconds off the 10 year old record (3:59.69) set with Hall-of-Fame swimmer Claudia Chan.

Other notable swims: Collazo won the 200 Free in 2:14.83, Chryzl Goco winning the 100 back in a lifetime best 1:06.22, Canning just missing her own 100 Breaststroke record, winning in 1:13.77, Vanessa Xue winning the 100 free in 1:02.62, Goco in another lifetime best in the 200 Backstroke barely getting out touched for second in 2:22.62, Amanda Iken getting second in the 500 free in 6:19.51, and Courtney McEvoy Lee coming back in the last 50 to out touch teammate Emily DiPaola in the 200 IM in 2:37.88 and 2:38.50.

"More records were broken in a single dual meet tonight than have been broken in a single season since Andrew and I started coaching the Hawks," said co-head coach Scott Bintner. "The team was relaxed, confident and cohesive, contributing to their success. We expected some good swims tonight, but again they exceeded our expectations, shattering records that we thought might be within reach."
