QUEENS, NY – The Hunter Hawks women's swimming team competed against
Queens College on Monday night, with the Hawks coming away with a 127-110
victory, the team's fourth in a row to open the 2014-15 season.
"It was a deep and cohesive team that had to fight for the win," said co-head
coach
Scott Bintner. "We overcame a 32 point deficit by the Queens divers."
The Hawks relay teams made a big impact sweeping both the Medley and Freestyle,
assisted by wins by CUNYAC Swimmer of the Week
Alexandra Rubiano in the 100
butterfly and
Carla Canning in the 100 breaststroke. Both were hard fought races,
and both lowered their own team records in those events.
The 200 Medley Relays consisting of
Chryzl Goco, Canning, Rubiano, and
Charlotte Collazo on the "A" relay; and
Niky Wu,
Christina Chu,
Shannon Lyver and
Monika McKie on the "B" relay swept that event to
put the Hawks up by 13 points.
In the next few events,
Amanda Iken took 2nd in the 1000 free,
CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Jessaica Lou,
Lindsey Pero and
Chryzl Goco went
2-3-4 in the 200 free and
Charlotte Collazo took 2nd in the 50 free, which narrowed the Hawks
lead to only 2 points.
It opened up a bit more with a win by Rubiano in the 200 IM; Kelley
Xue and
Emily DiPaola taking 3rd and 4th, giving the Hawks an 11 point
lead going into the diving break.
Both diving events were competed at this time, allowing the Queens
Knights to score 32 points, giving the Hawks a 21-point deficit to
make up.
With Rubiano's record breaking win in the butterfly, Pero swimming a
lifetime best for 3rd and
Shannon Lyver swimming for 4th her first
time swimming individually as a Hawk, that deficit was brought down to
only 12.
"I fully believe that
this team is only starting to understand their full potential, and
with much of the season still ahead of us, I am excited to see them
continually exceed their own expectations, and continue to set their
sights higher," said coach Bintner.
After that, Collazo could only place 3rd in the 100 free but did so
shattering her in-season best time against two of the Knights top
swimmers, putting the Hawks back to a 19-point deficit.
In the next event, Goco answered by swimming a lifetime best in the
100 backstroke for the win, yet the Hawks still had 14 points to make
up.
Lou stepped up for a season best time in the 500 for a win, with
DiPaola coming back from behind to take second, leaving the Hawks only
3 points behind.
After a short break,
Carla Canning broke her own team record from last
season in the 100 breast, and Lou took 3rd in another lifetime best
and DiPaola took 5th; with Lou and DiPaola having swam the 500 free
only a few minutes before, putting the Hawks up by 4 points, in the
first lead since diving.
The win was sealed with a sweep of the 200 freestyle relays; Wu,
Alexia Donis, Pero and
Vanessa Xue making up the "A" relay, and K.
Xue, McKie, Chu and Lyver on the "B" relay.
"Coach Netti and I thought the team swam great tonight, as they have trained
hard, and the results are showing their efforts," said Bintner.
