NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter women's swimming team wrapped up an undefeated CUNYAC regular season on Tuesday night as they defeated John Jay College 59-32. The Hawks are 9-1 overall and 6-0 in CUNYAC play.
The Hawks medley relays cruised to a 1-2 victory in the 200 Medley relay, posting good times despite swimming unchallenged.
The depth of Hunter's distance swimmers was not enough to secure the win in the 1000 free, as
Christina Valente and
Grace Huezo finished second and third.
"This was a meet we used to start setting goals for the Championship season, said co-head coach
Scott Bintner. " Coach Netti and I wanted to give our swimmers some experience in the areas we'd like to see some improvement, and the toughness of the team is showing."
The 200 free was won by
Kelly Xue, her first time swimming the event this season. She pulled away in the last 50 to outpace John Jay's top swimmer.
Charlotte Collazo and
Niky Wu dominated the 50 freestyle sweeping the event, as did
Carla Canning and
Courtney McEvoy Lee in the 200 IM one event later, with Canning dropping to her best time this season.
The 100 Butterfly was won by the CUNYAC Swimmer-of-the-Week,
Lindsey Pero.
"We saw some great swims tonight," said Bintner. "Both from our swimmers that have previously plateaued in their events, and those we took out of their element to swim races they aren't used to swimming."
Vanessa Xue and Wu placed first and second in the 100 free with the teammates battling each other for the win.
Alexandra Rubiano took off for an early lead and cruised to victory in the 100 backstroke, with
Amanda Iken placing third.
Jessica Lou swam her lifetime best in the 500 free for the win, breaking the 6-minute psychological barrier without a head-to-head challenger
Without scoring,
Vanessa Xue and
Christina Chu swept the 100 breaststroke.
The 200 freestyle relays were again swept by the Hawks, who conceded the points to the Bloodhounds.
"We still have a few meets to do some fine-tuning before championships, and we expect to see some great swims in a few short weeks."
The Hawks return to the pool on Saturday January 17 when they will take on Western Connecticut State at 12pm.
