New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's swimming fell to Queens College on Monday night, where half a second is all the separated the Hawks from the victory. The Purple and Gold lost both the medley and freestyle relays by slim margins, in what would prove to be the deciding factor.
"We lost and it's disappointing," said head coach
Michael Kokoszka. "What's not disappointing is the effort the team put forth and how hard they swam."
The opening 200 medley relay was a back and forth affair, as Hunter and Queens traded the lead on each leg of the relay. Ultimately, Queens out touched Hunter 2:00.51 to 2:00.92
In the very next event, Hunter showed its distance event strength as sophomore Sera Knobler placed first in a time of 11:42.23 and Irene Collins followed closely behind adding third place points in a time of 12:26.70.
In the 200 freestyle, Â
Alexandra Rubiano brought the crowd to its feet with a victory in a down-to-the wire race, shaving two seconds off her in-season best time going 2:06.23 to Queens College's 2:06.45.
Other highlights of the meet included in season best times from Hanaa Lachhab and Molly Baran in the 100 Butterfly, a 1-2 finish from Gabrielle Oczos and
Kelly Xue in the 100 backstroke and an in-season best time and second place finish by Virginia Anne Dundon in the 100 breastroke.
