Kings Point NY – The swimming and diving team took on the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in a non-conference meet on Tuesday evening. The Hawks snapped a four-meet win streak and were defeated by a score of 161-62, moving their overall record to 8-3.
On the day, the Hawks had one individual event winner and three earn second place finishes while the two relay teams each finished as runner up.
In the first event of the meet,
Gabrielle Oczos, Em Nash,
Alexandra Rubiano and
Katherine Lee came together and managed second place. Their time of 2:01.06 in the 200 yard Medley Relay was just shy of USMMA's quartet by less than one and a half seconds.
Rubiano was the lone event winner on the evening, out-swimming her opponents in the 100 yard butterfly. Her time of 1:02.98 edged out her nearest competitor by less than .5 seconds and is a season best.
Sera Knobler raced to second place in the 1000 yard freestyle, touching the final wall in a season best 11:32.66. Oczos also chalked up a second place finish for the Purple and Gold. She completed the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:06.64 which is the fastest time on the team this year so far. The last of the Hawks to earn a runner up finish was
Virginia Anne Dundon. In a tight race in the 100 yard breaststroke, the freshman clocked in at 1:15.15 which was just .35 shy of first place and less than a second ahead of third. It's also the best mark for the Hawks so far this season.
The quartet of Rubiano,
Kelly Xue, Knobler and Lee combined for second place in the 200 yard freestyle relay after stopping the clock at 1:52.51 to end the meet.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday, January 19 when they host their CUNYAC rivals, Baruch College in the North Pool. First swim is slated for a 6pm start.
