New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's volleyball got its first victory of the season on Wednesday night in a home opener against the College of Saint Elizabeth in three sets (25-5, 25-14, 25-10).
The Hawks are now 1-3 this year, while the Eagles have a record of 0-2 this season.
Hunter went up 14-4 in the first set before scoring 10-straight points, off nine serves from
Blake Hogan, to take a 24-4 lead.
Qendrim Shala got the deciding kill to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Eagles stayed closer in the second set until the Purple and Gold went on a 10-3 run, featuring kills from
Christian Maisonet and
Michael Jazgarski, to make the score 17-8. The Hawks gave up six more points, but finished them off by recording the last three of the set to take it, 25-14.
Hunter took an early 14-5 advantage in the third and then proceeded to outscore CSE 7-3, capitalizing on Eagle errors. The Hawks won the last four points of the set, finding two kills from
Sherrod Cole and a service ace from
Samuel Gibson to win the match in a solid 3-0 sweep.
Hunter hit .421 in the win, holding the Eagles to a hitting percentage of -.178.Â
Jazgarski led with seven kills, followed by five apiece from Maisonet and
Cyrus De Guzman.
Alec Helford tallied 20 assists, while Shala recorded a team-high eight digs in the victory.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they host Misericordia at 6 p.m.
