New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's volleyball hosted Stevens Institute of Technology and St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Saturday, falling to both teams at the Hunter Sportsplex.
The Hawks are now 12-8 this season, while holding on to a 4-0 record in the CUNYAC.
Stevens 3, Hunter 2
The Hawks went to five sets with #4 nationally ranked Stevens but eventually dropped the match, posting scores of 25-19, 15-25, 25-16, 20-25 and 11-15.
With the score tied at nine in the first set the Hawks found two-straight kills from
Michael Jazgarski and two from
Qendrim Shala to propel them to a 13-9 advantage. A service ace from
Alec Helford made the score 16-12 as the Hawks finished off the set with a 25-19 win to go up 1-0. After trailing by four points, Stevens bounced back in the second set, going on a 17-3 run to take it, 25-15.
Hunter took over the third set when they scored five-straight points, including two service aces from Shala, to go up 18-8. The Ducks began to record points, but the Hawks scored five of the last six points to get the 25-16 win.
The fourth set was a close one, featuring eight tied scores before the Ducks started to pull ahead by five points. The Hawks cut the lead to two but Stevens eventually wrapped it up with a 25-20 win. With the score at a stalemate at six in the fifth and final set, Stevens scored four-straight points to gain a lead. The Purple and Gold found kills from Shala,
Christian Maisonet and
Jben Mui in the remaining points but could not close the deficit, falling 15-11.
Shala and
Michael Jazgarski led the effort with 12 kills each, with Jazgarski posting just one error for a .478 hitting percentage. Maisonet added 11 and
Blake Hogan chipped in eight kills in the loss.
Chris Scandole registered a team-high 16 digs and
Alec Helford recorded 44 assists.
St. Joseph's L.I. 3, Hunter 1
The Purple and Gold dropped a match with close scores in four sets to the Golden Eagles later in the day (24-26, 16-25, 25-22 and 21-25).
The Hawks struggled with the Golden Eagles' defense, hitting -.012 in the loss, while SJL posted a mark of .114.
Maisonet earned 20 kills to lead the Hunter offense in the match, while four players tallied double-digit digs. Scandole recorded 21 to guide the defense, as Maisonet had 16, Hogan had 12 and Shala notched 11. Helford recorded 31 assists in the loss.
The team returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Medgar Evers College for a 7 p.m. match.
