Jamaica, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team won a pair of conference matches on Monday afternoon, advancing to 4-0 in CUNYAC play.
The Hawks took on York College (0-3, 0-2 CUNYAC) first, winning in straight sets (25-5, 25-7, 25-8). Hunter (7-8, 4-0 CUNYAC) allowed just 20 points in the matches' entirety led by
Liliana Khidr's career-high nine service aces. Senior,
Mariam Ouattara contributed with eight service aces of her own to go along with six kills. The squad dropped the first two points of the match but would not trail again as they dominated with a .409 hitting percentage.
Hunter then faced off against Brooklyn College in a neutral site contest. The win puts the Purple and Gold in first place for conference rankings as it took down the Bulldogs (10-8, 3-1 CUNYAC) in four. The Hawks got off to a strong start, scoring four unanswered to start off the match. They would hold the lead and cruise to a 1-0 start. The second set saw Brooklyn fight back with Hunter trailing from the start as it dropped the set, 25-17. The Hawks trailed again for the majority of the third set until a kill by
Alexa Sayson tied the score at 23. A back-and-forth battle ensued as the two teams traded single-point leads until a pair of errors on by the Bulldogs gave Hunter the win, 30-28. The Hawks proved their resilience in the fourth set for another come from behind win. Trailing by up to seven at one point, the Hawks evened the score at 16 and rallied to a 25-22 victory to finish off the day. Freshman,
Erin Hyman led the team with a season-high 33 digs in the match, while Ouattara's own season-high 14 kills helped secure the win.
Hunter returns to the court for it's home opener on Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup against Ramapo College at 6 p.m.
