New York- The Hunter College women's volleyball team celebrated its senior class with a sweep of Lehman College in its final home contest of the regular season.
The Hawks (11-11, 5-1 CUNYAC) won 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-2) as they dominated conference opponent, Lehman (1-13, 1-5 CUNYAC) at the Hunter Sportsplex on Tuesday night. Ahead of the match, Hunter honored its seniors in
Brittany Wang,
Alexa Sayson,
Beverly Wong,
Justine Smith, and
Mariam Ouattara.
After dropping the initial point of the first set, the Hawks battled back and forth early on but took off scoring six consecutive points aided by a trio of service aces by Ouattara. She would go on the post a career-high of eight aces for the night. Hunter continued to lead by four or more, eventually going on an 8-0 run. The Lightening would interrupt the pattern off of a service error but the Hawks continued thier assalt to take the set 25-10.
Set #2 saw the Hawks lead right away, taking the first four points. Lehman would put three points on the board, but fell behind quickly as the Purple and Gold grabbed an 11-3 lead. Aces were abundant again as
Beverly Wong delivered two in a row. She would also come away with a career-high in five aces on the night in addition to
Liliana Khidr's four in the set. The squad closed the second set 25-7 with a kill from
Brittany Wang for the final point.
Hunter's dominance showed again as it held Lehman to just two points in the final set of the night.
Leading the team for the night in digs was Wang, with seven, another career-high.
Kiara Abreu grabbed 11 assists, followed by Smith's eight. Libero,
Kayla Treadwell made her Hawks debut tonight with three digs. Overall, Hunter commanded the match with a .538 hitting percentage
The Purple and Gold resumes play on Oct. 30 as it visits USMMA for the final match of the regular season. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Kings Point, NY.
