New York, NY – The #4 seeded women's volleyball team hosted the top seeded Brooklyn Bulldogs earlier this evening in the CUNYAC Championship finale. In a match that went five sets to determine the outcome, Hunter found themselves on the short end of a 3-2 score, settling for CUNYAC Runner up.
The Purple and Gold's offense was powered by
Mariam Ouattara's 14 kills as she led three others in double digit kills.
Justine Smith was the game high assist earner with 41 while on the defensive end, five Hawks racked up double digit digs with
Erin Hyman leading the way with 26.
Hunter's office came out fired up with four straight kills courtesy of an even split from
Alexa Sayson and
Pearl Mensah. They then found themselves up 8-2. However, they traded nine straight points and wound up tying the game at 23 apiece. Two late errors gave the Bulldogs the first set, 1-0.
It was another early 8-2 Hunter lead in the second set, but this time the Purple and Gold did not allow Brooklyn to get close. A late 7-1 run put their opponents away with the exclamation mark coming from a
Brittany Wang kill to make it 1-1.
The third was played evenly until six unanswered Brooklyn points made it tied up at 20-20. The top seed used the late momentum and closed on a 5-1 run to make it a 2-1 affair.
Andrew Woolward's squad once again bounced back with a dominating fourth set in which they hit .429 with 19 kills and just four errors on 35 attempts, making it tied up at two apiece with a convincing 25-10 set victory.
Hunter played catchup from the get-go in the last set but unfortunately were unable to close the gap. The end result was a 15-9 Brooklyn set and match victory.
For their efforts, Ouattara and Smith were named to the CUNYAC/Pepsi Women's Volleyball Championship All-Tournament Team.
