Brooklyn, N.Y.- In a cross-town match, the Hunter College women's volleyball team fell to the NYU Violets in straight sets tonight.
The first set saw NYU (10-0) dominate early, winning 25-9. Set #2 started out in similar fashion, with the Hawks trailing 11-5 in the set's largest deficit. The Purple and Gold fought back from there to take the lead, and hold it until an ace by NYU put the home team back on top. The back and forth would continue until the Hawks ultimately lost, 25-23.
After a slow start, Hunter led throughout the night's final set until the Violets took the advantage at 18-17. Unable to break through NYU's defense, the Hawks would fall 25-17 in set #3. The non-conference defeat leaves the Hawks with a 2-3 record for the season.
The close competition featured Mariapaz Lojano recording a team-high six digs in her career debut. Upperclassmen Beverly Wong and Justine Smith each tacked on nine kills for the night, while Smith also managed nine assists and a pair of aces.
Hunter returns to the court this Saturday (Sept. 25) for a tri-match against Rowan and Cabrini University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Randor, Pa.
