Kings Point, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team fell in a five set match on the road to United States Merchant Marine Acadamy on Thursday evening. The loss pushes the Hawks to 15-6 overall for the '22 season.
The Purple and Gold took the first set, 25-23 as
Bethany Tomaneng started off with a service ace, the Hawks quickly jumped out to 10-5 lead. The Mariners went on a run of their own to come within two but Hunter logged nine of the next 11 points. With the Hawks stuck at 24, the home team scored an impressive seven straight points, but Hunter ultimately overcame with a block by Pearn Mensah and
Mariapaz Lojano as Hunter took the first set. 25-23.
USMMA rallied to win the next two set, 25-20 and 26-24, to put the Hawks down 2-1 heading into the fourth set. This time it was the Mariners that got on the board early, but Hunter went on two 4-0 runs to come back and ultimately tie the match at 2-2 with another game winning point by Mensah for the 25-22 win.
The final set saw a back and forth battle between the two teams, but the Mariners were able to finish off the win, 15-12.
Mariam Ouattara led all players in the match with 20 kills, while
Tionna Moss had 16 and
Simone McIntyre recorded 11. Freshman setter
Bethany Tomaneng had an impressive match-high 57 assists, while senior libero
Nadia Lau picked up 29 digs – the most on the night for either team
The Hawks return to the court for a tri-match on Saturday at Montclair State, Widener University will also participate. The first match is slated to start at 11:00 am.
