Volleyball Drops 2 in Trimatch

Montclair, N.J.- The Hunter College women's volleyball game dropped two games in a trimatch hosted by Montclair State on Saturday afternoon. The matches push the Hawks back to 15-8 overall

The Hawks started the day against host, Montclair, with a 0-3 loss in 25-20, 25-19, and 25-17. The home team got out to a 6-2 lead to start the first set. Hunter battled back and used an 8-3 spurt of their own to trim the deficit to two at 20-18, the Red Hawks were too much and eventually overcame the Purple and Gold 25-20. Again, Montclair jumped out to an 8-4 start in the second set. After being down 16-10, the Purple and Gold fought back to come within three, capitalized by a service ace from Mariam Ouattara. A pair of attack errors extended the gap and eventually put Hunter down 0-2 for the match.

Hunter stormed out of the gates in the final frame, tallying six of the first nine points, including a pair of kills from Simone McIntyre. The Hawks held the lead until at 10-8 when Montclair went on an eight point run. Hunter again fought back coming within three at 15-18, but Montclair was too much, going on a 8-2 run to close out the match in straight sets.

In the second match of the day, Hunter took on Widener University. Widener got out to an early 10-5 lead in set one. The Hawks continued to trail, but made a push as they scored five straight points, sparked by. a block from Tiona Moss and Ouattara, to come within three. Moss would log two more kills in the game but it wasn't enough, as Widener took the first set, 25-21. Set two started off in a similar fashion, but three straight errors from the Pride and a kill from McIntyre gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead. Despite another 6-1 run by Hunter, the Pride was still too much, holding the Hawks to just six more points to jump out to a 2-0 lead in 25-21.  Hunter forced a fourth set with a 26-22 win in the third. The Hawks separated themselves early on with a 12-5 lead where Moss continued to shine with a pair of kills an another block. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth but Hunter ultimately came out on top to take the third set before the Pride finished the match in the fourth set with a 25-22 finish. Moss lead the team with 11 kills in the match, while Tomaneng had 26 assists in the match.

Hunter looks to continue its season with its final CUNYAC match at Lehman College on Oct. 25.
