Athletics Mourns the Passing of Former Coach Ed Zarowin

"Coach Z" was at the helm of the cross country and track and field teams for over 30 years

New York, NY - It is with regret the department announces the passing of former long-time cross country and track and field coach, Ed Zarowin. "Coach Z" as he was known, was one of the longest serving coaches in Hunter Athletics history and passed away on March 9, 2022, at the age of 95.

Coach Z spent 30 years as the head coach of both the men's and women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams. A 1996 Hunter Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Zarowin was named the CUNYAC Coach of the Year 33 times during his coaching career. Additionally, his athletes garnered numerous successes including Division III National appearances and Championships and over 20 All-America nods. At the conference level his athletes earned countless All-Star awards and individual titles. Coach Z was responsible for 47 CUNYAC championships.

A veteran of World War II, Zarowin graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He went on to become an assistant principal at Brooklyn Tech High School, where he spent 33 years, with 22 of those as head coach of their cross country and track & field teams, several of which rose to top national rankings.

Zarowin is predeceased by his wife, Mary, who passed away in 2014, and he is survived by their two sons, Paul and Louis, and three grandchildren, Diana, Joseph and David.
