BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team secured a 3-2 win over John Jay on Tuesday evening to finishout the 2023 regular season slate at a perfect 7-0 in CUNYAC play, earning the regular season champion title.
Hunter  (20-8; 7-0 CUNYAC) faced off against John Jay (16-8; 5-2 CUNYAC) in their final conference match of the year in a hard-fought five-set match where the Hawks emerged victorious.
The game began with the Bloodhounds taking an early lead, winning the first set 25-23. The set was marked by some excellent attacking plays from both teams, with Tessa Winkleman leading the way. In the second set, the Purple and Gold bounced back with a strong performance, winning 25-21. Winkleman continued to dominate the net, and Hunter's defense stepped up to secure the win led by blocks from Pearl Mensah and Tionna Moss.
Hunter maintained its momentum in the third set, securing a 25-22 victory as Bethany Tomaneng's precise sets were instrumental in their success.
John Jay fought back in the fourth set, winning 25-17. Faith Harer led her team with some crucial blocks and kills, keeping the match alive.
The fifth and final set was a dramatic battle between the two teams. The Hawks ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 15-9.  Winkleman's consistency in attacking and Hunter's strong blocking at the net sealed the win.
Winkleman led all players, contributing with 22 kills and 13 digs. Tomaneng notched an impressive 45 assists and 22 digs as she played a crucial role in the win.  Moss also aided in the victory, adding 11 kills while Mensah stood out on defense with four blocks. Erin Dugan tacked on 14 digs for the night as well.
The match was marked by 25 tie scores and 12 lead changes, highlighting the closely contested nature of the game. With this win, Hunter College maintained their perfect 7-0 record in the CUNYAC conference to be named regular season champions.
The Hawks finish out their regular season with a home match against William Patereson as they honor six graduating seniors prior to the 6:00 p.m. start.
