New York, N.Y.- This season marks a special milestone for Hunter College's women's basketball program: Coach
John Garrett's tenth year as head coach, making him the longest-tenured coach on staff. With an impressive 125-117 overall record and a history of postseason success, Coach Garrett's impact stretches far beyond wins and losses. His unwavering dedication to his players, both on and off the court, has cemented his legacy at Hunter as a mentor, motivator, and architect of a strong team culture.
When Garrett first took the reins of the women's basketball program, he faced the challenges of building a competitive team while creating a supportive and driven environment. Over the past decade, he has guided the Hawks to consistent playoff berths, eight semifinal appearances, two finals, and a memorable conference championship in 2018-19—a season that also earned him Coach of the Year honors. Under his leadership, the Hawks have had only one season below .500 in conference play, boasting an 81-53 league record. Garrett's philosophy has always focused on growth and resilience. His coaching mantra, "The most successful people are comfortable with being uncomfortable," has inspired his players to embrace challenges and grow beyond their comfort zones. As senior player
Eliah Yode reflects, "We all say this, but Garrett's infamous quote is something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. He'd remind us of this during practices when we were in tough positions. I'm grateful to have been part of the team during Coach's tenth season and can't wait to finish it with a bang!"
One of the most remarkable aspects of Coach Garrett's tenure is his dedication to his players as people, not just athletes. He has guided many through the pressures of collegiate life, academics, and athletics, always making himself available as a mentor.
Erin Cosio, a current player balancing nursing school and basketball, says, "Coach has supported me through everything. He has never let me doubt my role on the team and always instills confidence and trust in me."
Katie Burke, another current player, emphasizes Garrett's commitment to helping his athletes reach their full potential. "He's a coach that's always helping me find ways to grow, not just on the court but off it too," she says. This holistic approach to coaching has left a lasting impact, evident in the bonds Garrett has formed with his players, many of whom continue to lean on him for guidance long after graduation.
Alumna Theresa Leung (2016-2020) describes Garrett as a lifelong mentor: "You guided me through college and taught me to be a leader on and off the court. Even after college, if I ever have questions about life, I know he's the one I can go to. Thanks for all the valuable lessons, Coach, and congrats on your tenth year!" Kristen Markoe, a player from 2010-2015, speaks fondly of Garrett's infectious energy and passion. "Coach John made basketball fun, even at the collegiate level. He made you fall in love with the game all over again. He really listened to us and cared about us, not just as players but as individuals. Coach created a strong culture of enjoyment, determination, and hard work that extended past the court," she shares. Markoe's sentiment is echoed by many other alumni, who have remained part of the Hunter basketball family long after their final game. Ayanna Hudson (2012-2016) credits Garrett for being a pillar of support during tough moments as a student-athlete. "His door was always open for the Hawk Family, and for that, he is easily one of the best coaches I've ever had," she says. The relationships Garrett has nurtured over the years are a testament to his genuine care and belief in his players' futures.
As Garrett embarks on his tenth season, he remains as committed as ever to leading the Hawks to new heights. With postseason aspirations once again in sight, he hopes to continue the tradition of excellence and camaraderie that has defined Hunter College women's basketball under his leadership. Reflecting on his legacy, assistant coach and former player
Madison LaSalle sums it up: "Coach Garrett has had a tremendous impact on my career. He helped me develop confidence, leadership, and teamwork—skills that extend far beyond the court." Coach Garrett's influence stretches across generations of athletes who are grateful for his guidance, wisdom, and unyielding support. As Janine Conway (2017-2020) puts it, "Transferring to Hunter and playing for Coach Garrett was the best decision I ever made. He genuinely cared about you as a person, not just a player. He made an impact on my life far beyond basketball, and I'll always be grateful."
As Hunter College celebrates this milestone, one thing is clear: Coach Garrett's decade of dedication has left an indelible mark. The Hawks have thrived under his leadership, and his influence continues to shape players on and off the court. Thank you, Coach Garrett, for ten incredible years. Here's to many more.
