BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team (1-5-0) notched their first win of the season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Albertus Magnus at home on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks capitalized on key offensive opportunities while relying on a staunch defensive effort to secure the clean sheet.
Bradley Espejo was the driving force behind the Hawks' attack, registering both a goal and an assist. The midfielder set the tone early, assisting on the opening goal just two minutes into the match. Ben Avakook found the back of the net, with Espejo threading a perfect pass to give Hunter a 1-0 lead. Avakook, who was active throughout the game with four shots (two on target), delivered a composed finish to put the Hawks ahead.
Hunter's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Max Tsigalnitsky, held firm against Albertus Magnus' persistent attack. Tsigalnitsky was stellar in his first collegiate start, making seven saves and denying the visitors multiple times, especially in the second half, when Albertus Magnus pressed for an equalizer.
As the game neared its conclusion, Hunter sealed the win in the 83rd minute. Espejo turned from provider to scorer, finishing a pass from Samuel Benson to make it 2-0. Benson's assist added a key contribution to his strong all-around performance in the forward line.
Despite facing 19 shots, Hunter's defense managed to keep Albertus Magnus off the scoreboard. Tsigalnitsky and the backline, led by heavy minutes from Christian Rodriguez, held their shape well under pressure, withstanding numerous set-piece attempts. Senior, Conor Sullivan also made an impact, winning several long balls to curb the Falcons' offensive attempts, even managing to make a run to the vistor's half several times on an offense attempt of his own.
This victory gives the Hawks much-needed momentum as they aim to build on this strong performance in their upcoming matches. The Purple and Gold will return to the pitch on Sept. 21 as they travel to Saint Elizabeth University for a 12:00 p.m. start.
