BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team battled against United States Merchant Marine Academy in the squad's home opener at Randall's Island on Wednesday afternoon as they fell in a tough 5-1 loss.
Despite the final scoreline, Hunter showed promise, particularly through the efforts of standout forward Ben Avakook, who netted the Hawks' first home goal of the season, and goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz, who made a series of key saves.
The match began with an early surge from Merchant Marine, who found the back of the net just 2:40 into the game. However, Hunter quickly adjusted and prevented further damage for much of the first half, with Heimowitz stepping up to record five saves before halftime.
After falling behind 3-0 by the break, the Hawks regrouped, coming out in the second half with renewed energy. Their aggressive play resulted in seven shots, more than doubling their attempts from the first half. Avakook led the charge, recording three shots on goal and converting a beautiful effort in the 84th minute. Assisted by David Zlobinsky after a long ball from goalkeeper Max Tsigalnitsky, Avakook broke through the Mariners' defense and provided the Purple and Gold with a well-deserved goal, sending the home crowd into cheers.
The Hawks' second-half performance was an encouraging sign, with Leonardo Kaplan and Saleel Eldin contributing offensively, while defenders Alpha Barry and Christian Rodriguez held firm against the Mariners' constant pressure.Â
Though Merchant Marine added a late goal in the 89th minute, Hunter's refusal to back down was evident throughout the match. The Hawks' defense tightened up in the second half, allowing just two goals and limiting Merchant Marine to nine shots, compared to 15 in the first half.
Despite the outcome, Hunter's tenacity and second-half improvement, signal that the team is growing and gaining momentum. The Hawks look to garner their first win on Saturday Sept. 7 as they head to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville at 12 p.m.
