BOX SCORE Purchase, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team dropped a road match to the Manhattanvlille Valiants on Saturday afternoon, 5-2. Despite the final score, Hunters' newcomers showcased their talent.
Hunter's offensive momentum was evident, especially in the second half where they led with 11 shots compared to Manhattanville's 10, demonstrating their ability to pressure the opposing defense. Leonardo Kaplan was a standout for the Hawks, involved in both of Hunter's goals. His vision and quick footwork provided a critical assist on Ben Avakook's first-half strike, which brought the Hawks within one goal. Kaplan would later find the back of the net himself in the 67th minute, finishing with a game-high six shots, four of which were on target. His performance was a bright spot, and his offensive spark kept Manhattanville on their heels.
The Hawks struck first in the 25th minute, with Avakook scoring off a pinpoint assist from Kaplan, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Manhattanville. Avakook, a forward with an eye for goal, continued to push the attack, taking three shots and forcing two saves. This goal brought Hunter back into the game at 2-1, igniting hope of a comeback.
Hunter's defense, led by goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz, faced a barrage of shots from a potent Manhattanville attack. Heimowitz stood tall, making six critical saves to keep the Hawks in the game, including key stops against aggressive shots from Manhattanville's John Castaneda and Alec Pineda. Heimowitz's efforts allowed Hunter to stay within striking distance for much of the match.
In the second half, the Hawks displayed their resilience. Kaplan's goal in the 67th minute breathed new life into the team, reducing the deficit to 4-2 and setting the stage for a potential rally. Kaplan, unmarked at the edge of the box, unleashed a precise shot into the bottom corner, giving Hunter hope as the match wore on. His relentless energy and pressing play helped Hunter gain control of the ball in crucial moments.
While Manhattanville capitalized on their chances, scoring two goals early in the second half, Hunter continued to fight back, generating several opportunities. Bradley Espejo added pressure from the midfield, registering three shots and testing Manhattanville's goalkeeper, Luis Granados, on multiple occasions.
The Hawks return to action on Sept. 14 as they head to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph's Long Island. Kick-off is slated for 12:00 p.m.
