BOX SCORE NEW YORK- The Hunter College men's basketball team hosted CCNY on Breast Cancer Awareness Night in the Sportsplex on Tuesday evening. Despite the 88-81 loss, the Hawks had notable performances from several players, highlighted by career-highs from both Felipe Carter and Jayden Jarrett.
The Hawks (5-18, 3-9 CUNYAC) came out firing, as Felipe Carter made his first start for Hunter count. The sophomore guard was electric, attacking the basket and knocking down shots from beyond the arc. Carter led the team as he poured in a career-high 30 points on 11-of-23 shooting, including four three-pointers, keeping Hunter in control for much of the first half.
Hunter led 42-39 at halftime behind Carter's scoring spree and Jayden Jarrett's dominance in the paint. Jarrett recorded a career-high 19 points and 16 rebounds, for his first double-double, shooting an efficient 7-for-9 from the field. His defensive presence was also felt with two blocks, as he anchored the Hawks on both ends.
The second half remained a back-and-forth affair, with Hunter maintaining a slim lead in the opening minutes. Casey Meyers contributed from the perimeter, finishing with 12 points, including three three-pointers, while Donovan Cola added eight points with two made triples. Enzo Caceres-Roussel facilitated the offense, dishing out seven assists to go with his four points.
CCNY responded with a surge in the final 10 minutes, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and key defensive stops. Despite Carter's continued offensive pressure and Jarrett's relentless rebounding, the Beavers edged ahead in the closing minutes.
With under a minute to play, Carter nailed a clutch three-pointer to pull Hunter within five, but CCNY sealed the game at the free-throw line. The Hawks battled until the final buzzer, with Jarrett scoring on a fastbreak layup in the final seconds, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
Hunter shot 43.1% from the field and knocked down 10 three-pointers but struggled at the free-throw line, hitting just 62.5% (15-of-24). The Hawks also lost the rebounding battle 48-35, allowing CCNY critical second-chance points down the stretch.
Hunter returns to the court on Feb. 15 for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at Lehman College.
