Hunter Grapplers Dethrone King’s, 27-24

Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Hunter wrestling team earned a big victory on Saturday after dominating the mat with five pins and holding off a 19 point turn around to defeat King's College 27-24 in a dual match Saturday afternoon at Scandlon Gym in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

125 pounds

Senior Evan Velez (Bronx, NY/Lehman) earned his fourth pin of the season, defeating freshman Michael Tabasco (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) in 2:57 to improve to 6-4 on the season.

133 pounds

Freshman Sean Messina (West Islip, NY/West Islip) has been on a tear to start his collegiate career and continued his success on Saturday by pinning junior Anthony Dietrick (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) in 3:36 to improve to 3-0 on the year.

141 pounds

After a disappointing, hard-fought loss on Wednesday, sophomore Kyle Cammaroto (Amityville, NY/Amityville) recovered on Saturday by earning a 7-3 decision over junior Ton Miele (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) to improve to 1-1 and gave Hunter a 15-0 lead.

149 pounds

King's began its rally at 149 pounds with junior Frankie Davis (Madison, NJ/Madison) stealing a 3-2 decision away from junior Shabazz Bailey (Walden, NY/Valley Central) who was competing in his first match of the season.

157 pounds

Junior Taylor Green (Montgomery, MD/River Dell) gave King's four more points with a 10-1 major decision on freshman Matt Cartusciello (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) who now falls to 4-5 on the season.

165 pounds

The Monarchs rally continued at 165 pounds where freshman Jerry Robbins (Phillipsburg, PA/Phillipsburg) pinned junior Joseph Spiegel (Nyack, NY/Nyack) in three minutes.

174 pounds

King's would take its first lead of the match, 19-15, after sophomore Mike Reilly (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) pinned freshman Ryan Baxter (New York, NY/Hunter) in 3:35.

184 pounds

Competing in his first match in over two weeks, sophomore Joey Scott (Walden, NY/Valley Central) remained unbeaten on the season with a 2:18 pin over senior Zach Wilkinson (White Haven, PA/Crestwood) and also gave the Hawks a 21-19 lead.

197 pounds

Senior Brian Scher (Levittown, NY/MacArthur) then clinched the win for the Hawks by pinning senior Zach Martinez (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) in 2:30, while improving to 3-0 on the season.

Heavyweight

In the final bout, junior Chris Hash (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) recorded a technical fall, on junior Dan Heydebrand (New York, NY/Leadership) in the third period.

The Hawks, who now improve to 2-2 on the year, return to the mat on Friday, December 5 for their homecoming bout with Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.
