Allyshia West (Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) entered into a pitcher's duel Wednesday evening as the top team in the CUNYAC battled it out with the top in the Skyline Conference with each team coming out of the doubleheader with a 2-0 win and loss at the Martha Ave Softball field in Bellport, NY.
The Hawks had a tough outing in the first game, as senior Saint Joseph's pitcher
Jennifer Martinez (Bay Shore, NY/Bellport) tossed a perfect game, striking out 20 of the 21 batters she faced. West finished the game, pitching seven innings, striking out five batter and giving up two earned runs.
In the second game, the roles were reversed with the Hawks shutting out the Golden Eagles, 2-0. West struck out six batters for her sixth victory on the mound this season.
Martinez pitched three innings, strking out three batters and giving up one earned run before being replaced by sophomore
Alana Buckley (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) who struck out seven batters and also allowed one earned run.
Freshman designated player
Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) scored the game winning run when freshman short stop
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the top of the third inning. Hunter then tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning when freshman third baseman
Victoria Capece (Floral Park, NY/Mary Lewis) doubled to left to bring in sophomore catcher
Jaqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) who led the Hawks from the plate, hitting 2-for-4.
After tonight's doubleheader, the Hawks now stand at 14-14 overall and return to the diamond on Friday for the start of three straight days of softball action. On Friday, the Hawks will face York College for a single CUNY Athletic Conference game at 4:00 p.m. at Ammirati Field, then head to Staten Island on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Dolphins and on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against FDU-Florham.
