Hawks Shutout By FDU-Florham, 2-0

Staten Island, NY – Freshman short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) let the team in hitting, going 2-for-4, but was unable to help bring any runs across the plate as the Hawks were shut out by the Devils of Farleigh Dickinson University at Florham 2-0 in a single seven innings softball game Sunday afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.

After neither team got much going in the first inning, FDU loaded the bases and got a run across the plate on an error. The Devils then added an insurance run in the top of the third when senior third baseman Tara Hulse (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) singled home sophomore left fielder Amy Beideman (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) to take the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks remained quite from the plate until the bottom of the seventh when they threatened with bases loaded and just one out. However, their rally was cut short on a game ending double play. Senior right-hander Allyshia West (Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) got the start on the mound after pitching 13 innings on Saturday. In seven innings, West struck out six batters and gave up one earned run. Senior Katelyn Smith (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) picked up the victory on the mound for the Devils, striking out eight batters in the shutout.

The Hawks, who fall to 16-16 on the year, will return to the diamond on Wednesday, when they host Manhattanville College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Ammirati Field in the Lower East Side section of New York City.
