Bronx, NY – Entering into the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at six, sophomore outfielder
Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) stepped to the plate and sent a shot to left center for a double and would later score the game-winning run after a missed throw on a pick-off attempt to give the Hawks a 7-6 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden Thursday evening at Murphy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.
After a scoreless five innings in the first game, Rutgers-Camden opened up the sixth inning with three singles and would close out the top half of the inning with a 4-0 lead. The Hawks were able to score two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but were not able to get enough going to tie the game and force extra innings. Freshman catcher Ashley McDonald (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) who drove home the game-winning run, led the Raptors from the plate hitting 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Junior pitcher
Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) earns the win in the first game with six strikeouts and giving up just two runs, neither earned. Senior right- hander
Allyshia West (Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) pitched a full seven innings, striking out six batters and giving up two earned runs.
In between games, Hunter Athletics observed National Student-Athlete Day by giving out Spirit Awards that included men's volleyball, women's volleyball and softball receiving team spirit awards for supporting all of the Hunter Athletic teams throughout the school year. The second game was then opened up with a ceremonial first pitch, tossed by 2007 Hunter Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Dawn Gugliaro.
Falling behind 3-1, the Hawks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game for the second time. However, it appeared as if the Raptors were pulling away again just as they did in the firs game, with a three-run fourth inning led by senior short stop
Kaitlin Dreitlein (Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) who laid down a bunt that brought in two runs.
The Hawks once again rallied from behind, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which got started by freshman short stop
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) who hit a one-run double and would later score the tying run on a wild pitch.
Alves then worked some magic in the bottom of the seventh, leading off with a double and would virtually steal home on a bad pick-off attempt by the Raptors to seal the victory. West earned her eighth win of the season, striking out six batter, allowing three earned runs and pitched her 17th complete game of the season.
As the top seed entering into next week's CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament, the Hawks receive a bye in the first round and will now await their opponent which will come from the winner of #5 Brooklyn College at #4 John Jay College on Friday, May 2nd at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.
