Madison, NJ – The Hunter men's fencing team picked up 14-13 victory over St. John's University while competing in the first Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association [MACFA] event of the season, hosted by Drew University in Madison, NJ. The Hawks finished the day with a 1-5 record.
The Foil team had a successful day, defeating Stevens 6-3, the University of Maryland 6-4, Lafayette 6-3 and Rutgers 6-3. They were led by junior
Jose Samora, Jr. (New York, NY/Frederick Douglas Academy) who went 15-1 on the day along with junior
Marcus Ng (Flushing, NY/Townsend Harris) who won ten of 14 bouts.
In epee, sophomore
Nial Welch (Brooklyn, NY/St. Rose) picked up 11 wins, including three in the team's 9-0 sweep against Saint John's. Depsite the sabre team struggling to get a win on Saturday, freshman
Isaac Orbe (Bronx, NY/Lakeland) was able to win four bouts.
The Hawks will have a less than a day to rest up, as they are scheduled to head to the Vassar Invitational on Sunday where they will compete against Yeshiva, Haverford, Sacred Heart and Vassar.
